The PAU unit of the Atam Pargas Social Welfare Council launched a tree plantation campaign on July 11, 2017. The launch ceremony was organised at Guru Nanak Senior Secondary School, Bassian. Dr. Ravinder Kaur Dhaliwal, Director Students’ Welfare, PAU, graced the occasion as chief guest. She told that unit of Atam Pargas Social Welfare Council has been established at PAU, Ludhiana to groom PAU students as truthful human beings. The Directorate of Student Welfare through the Atam Pargas unit at PAU has initiated activities to inspire students to imbibe moral values from our rich heritage and undertake voluntary initiatives to care nature and to educate farmers to adopt resource conservation technologies of the PAU. She told that the student members of the Atam Pargas, PAU unit had organised seven leaf colour chart awareness training camps in seven villages (Bassian, Sur Singh Wala, Rajoke, Bhikhiwind, Shikaar Mashian, Rashpalvan and Sidhwan Kalan) in different districts (Ludhiana, Ferozepur, Tarntaran, Gurdaspur and Pathankot) of the state during the last year and tree plantation campaign has been launched during this monsoon season. She expressed her gratitude to Dr. Nachhattar Singh, Director Atam Pargas Social Welfare Council and Ex- Vice Chancellor, Guru Kashi University, Talwandi Sabo for his continuous support to the Directorate of Students’ Welfare for organising activities of the PAU unit of Atam Pargas Social Welfare Council. She also appreciated the efforts of Dr. Varinderpal Singh, Sr. Soil Chemist and Teacher In-charge, Atam Pargas Social Welfare Council, PAU, Ludhiana for organising and inspiring PAU students to partake in activities for the welfare of society.

Dr. Nachhattar Singh sensitized the huge gathering of student volunteers to take up the noble mission of tree plantation with high spirit. Dr. Varinderpal Singh told that tree plantation campaign has been systematically organised and 1000 volunteers have been identified for the purpose. Each volunteer will plant only one sapling and ensure its establishment as a tree. He further told that the Bassian village has also been adopted by Department of Soil Science, PAU to educate farmers to ensure judicious use of fertilizer nitrogen using leaf colour chart. All the farmers of the village had already been approached to follow LCC based N applications in rice with the help of Bassian unit of the Atam Pargas. The farmers are highly inspired and have already given commitments to ensure only LCC based Urea applications in more than 150 acre area of the village.

Mehtab Singh, student of the college of agriculture, PAU, Ludhiana delivered a short sensitizing address and shared a poem on the importance of trees. Dr. Ravinder Kaur Dhaliwal, Dr. Nachhattar Singh, Dr. Varinderpal Singh, S. Harjot Singh, Manager, Guru Nanak Sen. Sec. School, Bassian and Pr. Avtar Singh officially launched the tree plantation campaign by planting a tree at Guru Nanak Senior Secondary School Bassian and distributing saplings to the students.
